About this site

Extensive pre-colonial stone-walled settlements, terraced fields and cattle roads built by BaKoni communities across the Mpumalanga escarpment, visible over large areas around Machadodorp.

Why it matters

One of southern Africa's most remarkable precolonial agricultural landscapes, evidencing sophisticated farming and settlement engineering. Flagged in field research for vandalism risk and near-total absence of visitor infrastructure.
